Yang's Nick
Evagorou at the Bijing Olympics. Congratulations to Nick who won a
Bronze Medal from everyone in Singapore! Nick
Evagorou, Nam Yang U.K.’s San
Shou Instructor, recently travelled to
the Olympics in Beijing to compete in the 85kg San Shou category at the
2008 Wu
Shu Championships. Being the only British competitor selected for
the
tournament is obviously a huge honour for both Nick and Nam Yang as a
whole. Nick recently returned to the UK
having won a Bronze medal – a
fantastic achievement! Nick won his first fight against Elie
Saade of Lebanon,
taking the first round comfortably and landing a selection of hard
kicks and
punches. Elie fought hard in the second and it was much closer
but Nick
still controlled the action and won it 3-2.
- Nick’s
next fight was against Muslim
Salikov of Russia, who is generally held to be the best San Shou
fighter in the
world in the -85kg category. The fight started at a fast pace
with both
fighters throwing hard leg kicks. Nick landed several good
punches and
almost took the Russian down with a singe leg takedown. The fight
was
very close when Salikov throw his trademark turning sidekick, driving
his heel
into Nick’s ribs. Nick was winded and unfortunately couldn’t
quite beat
the resulting eight count.
- Even
though he lost Nick gave
Salikov his toughest fight of the tournament and put in one of his best
performances. Having an Olympic Bronze medallist as a San Shou
instructor
at the club is very prestigious for Nam Yang and so congratulations to
Nick are
in order.
