Profiles': Dominic Tan
Dominic
Seng Aun Tan was born in Singapore
in 1978 and first started training with Nam Yang since 1995 when he was
16
years old. He is an avid fan of all things culturally Asian and
Chinese. He
spent his youth learning and exploring all the different layers and
facets that
make a pugilist of Kung Fu. Besides his training at Nam Yang he has
also learnt
Chi Gong, Chan Tai Chi and Eagle Claw Kung Fu. He is a proficient foot
and body
reflexologist and has a passion for ancient Chinese texts such as the
Tao Te
Ching, The 36 stratagems, The Art of War and the I Ching.
Since
joining Nam Yang he has grown with
the club and enjoys learning and teaching under Master Tan. He has
represented
Nam Yang in several Singapore National Wu Shu competitions performing
hand patterns,
and short and long weapons patterns.
He
started teaching at the Kambangan
Community Centre and later at the Tanglin Community Centre. In 2000 he
was among
few instructors in Singapore to be tested and awarded the official martial arts
instructors
license under the Singapore Martial Arts Control Unit (MACU). In that
year he
also became a disciple of Master Tan Soh Tin as well as Master Tan Lian
Hok (From
Shaolin Hood Sand Dong) who taught him Iron Shirt Chi Gong.
In
his training he is particularly fond of
the sticking hands practice (which is more like Rou Shou), the Three
Section
Staff and the Daggers. He performs the traditional Southern Lion Dance
with the
Nam Yang troupe at Chinese Year, which he lead out in 2005. He has a
deep
kinship for the members of the UK
branches who regularly visit Singapore,
and was invited to teach at the UK summer
training camp in 2002.
